Carlos Gabriel ESA XMM-Newton Since 2001 I am responsible of the maintenance and further development of the XMM-Newton scientific data analysis and simulation packages. I am also, as a member of the Reflection Grating Spectrometer instrument team, in charge of certain aspects of the calibration and of the RGS instrument monitoring. I have received my PhD at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Heidelberg in 1989, working on experimental particle physics studying electro-weak interactions, particularly B-meson decays. After a post-doc in high energy physics at the Max-Planck institute for nuclear physics, I started to work in the astrophysics area with ISO at the Max-Planck institute for Astronomy, in Heidelberg, in 1991. My main tasks were the establishment of an ISOPHOT Data Centre and the development of the ISOPHOT data analysis pipeline S/W. I joined ESA in 1993 as staff, to work further on the ISO project. My main contribution to the project was the development of PIA, one of the interactive data analysis packages of the mission. As a member of the ISOPHOT Instrument Dedicated Team I came to VILSPA in 1995. I do not have any special astrophysics research area but have collaborated and continue doing so with researching colleagues helping with different aspects of data reduction. I understand also my job developing scientific analysis software from the point of view of a scientist. In addition I am active in the general area of astronomical data analysis as a member of the IUE FITS Working Group and as a member of the ADASS (Astronomical Data Analysis and Software Systems) permanent Program Organizing Committee.
