Pedro M. Rodríguez Pascual ESA XMM-Newton After a PhD at Universidad de Granada with a thesis on the study of the line emitting gas in the nucleus of a typical Seyfert 1 galaxy, I joined the IUE Observatory for six years, then moved into Universidad Europea de Madrid for three years and, since 2000, I am working for the Users Support Group in the XMM-Newton SOC. The gas surrounding the vicinity of the central engine in Active Galactic Nuclei(AGN) has always been the main topic of the my research, but not the only one. I have also studied the connection between star forming processes and AGN, the properties of the intergalactic medium, the role of foreground galaxies in metal absorption line systems and, more recently, the X-rays properties of Solar System bodies (planets and comets). The variety of research topics reflects a variety of observing and analysis techniques in different spectral domains: mid-resolution UV spectroscopy, high resolution optical spectroscopy, near infrared imaging, X-rays imaging and spectroscopy, time series analysis, reverberation mapping, photoionization codes, multivariate analysis, etc. Plans for the near future include the systematic analysis of the AGN observations in the XMM-Newton archive; after six years of operations the content of the archive has become sufficiently wide so as to draw meaningfull conclusions.
