HST astroquery use case: Globular clusters in M87

This use case is based on the MAST use case here.

The science case is searching for globular clusters in the galaxy M87; #### PAPER??? Richer et al. 1997, ApJ 484, 741).

Workflow:

  1. Query the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) for sources around the galaxy M87 that have both WFC2 F606W and F814W magnitudes and filter to find slightly extended objects.
  2. Search for observations of M87 in the HST archive.
  3. Download and visualise an image.
  4. Plot the HSC sources on the image.
  5. Create a colour-magnitude diagram and determine the value of num_images to use.
  6. Plot the globular cluster candidates with num_images > 180 on the image.

Step 1. Query the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC)

The following performs an Astronomical Data Query Language (ADQL) query to the Hubble Source Catalog (HSC) for sources centred on the galaxy M87, with radius 100 arcseconds, that have both WFC2 F606W and F814W magnitudes, filter to find slightly extended objects.

The WHERE clause defines the search parameters:

  • concentration index (ci = difference between magnitudes for apertures with a radius of 0.10 and 0.30 arcsec) is between 1.05 and 1.5 (to find slightly extended objects)
  • number of images in a match (>50)
  • W2_F606W - W2_F814W colour betwen 0.0 and 1.0

Step 5. Create a colour-magnitude diagram and determine the value of num_images to use.

The following plots a colour-magnitude diagram of V-I (F606W-F814W) versus V (F606W).

If you look at the num_images column returned from the HSC query, you'll see there are many sources that have been observed more than 100 times, and some 200 times. Try changing the num_images to greater than 10, then plot again in the CMD, and also see what the CMD looks like with num_images > 180.

num_images > 10 will not remove all of the artifacts. Determining the best value of num_images is often one of the most important decisions you will have to make when using the HSC!
