Bernard Laviron worked for EADS-Astrium in Toulouse where he was the project manager for the Gaia "Large Size SiC Mirror Demonstrator". This technology development mainly encompasses the design, manufacturing and testing at 160K operating temperature of a 1.4m x 0.5m large, off axis and aspherical Silicon Carbide mirror operating in visible wavelengths. (See also Picture of the week, 2004-05-17, for a picture of the mirror.)
Since 2002, Bernard Laviron was also responsible for the Gaia payload module mechanical and thermal architecture. His previous project experience includes MSG-SEVIRI (as mechanical and thermal architect) and ROCSAT2 (as mechanical and thermal architect, and for the development of the Silicon Carbide telescope structure).
Bernard retired in 2006.
