Cosmas studied Aerospace Engineering at the University of Stuttgart and at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After four years work for DaimlerChrysler Research in the field of fuel cell design and simulations, he got a PhD and joined Astrium Friedrichshafen in 2002. He was subsequently working in the domain of thermal/mechanical design and analysis for various satellite payloads (such as SWARM and MTG). In 2009, Cosmas entered the Gaia project team of Astrium in his role as system engineering manager of the Gaia Satellite Mechanical Package. He is technically responsible for thermal/mechanical engineering and the development of Gaia satellite subsystems like the micro-propulsion system, the satellite structure, and the deployable sunshield assembly.
