Katja Janßen is modelling the background contribution of not observed point sources for Gaia's RVS.
Born at the German North Sea coast, she moved inland to study Mathematics and Physics at the University of Göttingen, where she also received her PhD in Astrophysics on the "Structure and Dynamics of Small Scale Magnetic Fields in the Solar Atmosphere". After the doctorate, she worked as a PostDoc in solar science at the Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri, Florence, where she was also in charge of developing a software pipeline for IBIS, the Italian solar spectro-polarimeter. Coming back to Germany, she was involved in various projects, e.g. as manager for InnoFSPEC, a centre for innovative fibre spectroscopy and sensing, or software developer for IQLAC, a quick look software tool for NIRSpec/JWST.
In September 2010, Katja joined the Gaia Team at Potsdam, taking over from Pierre Ocvirk, responsible for the background correction in the RVS. More precisely Katja models the signature of not observed point sources on the detector, i.e. those parts of the not observed spectra, that fall into a target readout window. While she has to theoretically calculate these contributions from the position, brightness and parameters of a star, she can measure the contribution of the diffuse background directly using virtual objects.
Apart from software and astrophysics, Katja loves dancing and has already done Ballroom dances as well as acrobatic Rock'n'Roll. She has years of Salsa experience and has also started Tango Argentino recently.
