Nigel Hambly graduated with a BSc in Physics with Astrophysics from Leicester University in 1988, and obtained his PhD in Astronomy in 1992 (also from Leicester).
Following a 3 year postdoctoral position in Queen's University of Belfast, in 1995 he took up a position as a Higher Scientific Officer at the Royal Observatory, Edinburgh working on the SuperCOSMOS plate scanning project.
In 1999, he moved into the University of Edinburgh's Institute for Astronomy as a Research Fellow and founder member of the Wide Field Astronomy Unit. During his research career, Nigel has developed an interest in large-scale astronomical survey projects, and in 2007 he joined the Gaia DPAC to work within CU5 on calibration aspects of the core processing for the astrometric and photometric instruments.
