European Space Operations Centre
Ran Qedar is a Spacecraft Operations Engineer at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt (Germany), working for Telespazio Vega Deutschland. He is originally from Israel, where he graduated in Aerospace from the Technion Institute. He worked at Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) as an Operations Engineer on LEO satellites and obtained a Master degree in Business and Administration from Tel Aviv University at that time. In 2011 Ran attended the Summer Programme of the International Space University where he met his girlfriend for the last 5 years, Giulia. They both left their countries to move to The Netherlands, where Ran graduated in Space System Engineering from TU Delft. Afterwards both Ran and Giulia worked at Shell international.
Ran started to work on Gaia in 2015, taking the responsibilities for the Mission Control Software, data handling and automation. Recently he moved from data handling to power and thermal, where he coordinates tasks such as the Gaia mirror decontamination. His main focus is to implement close loop automation on the Gaia MCS, controlling both the ground station and the spacecraft without human intervention.
Outside of work Ran has been enjoying dancing salsa for the last 15 years and has also played DJ for salsa music in several clubs and events. In parallel to Gaia, Ran owns a small start-up company together with Giulia and another colleague from TU Delft. They work part-time on introducing new concepts from other industries into the space world. The first of these is a plug and play assembly line for satellites.
