Data rights policy and conditions of use

The SMILE Data Policy is defined as follows

Definitions

  • PI: Principal Investigator and including mission Co-PIs
  • SWT: SMILE Science Working Team, including Chief Scientist, Project Scientist, PIs and mission Co-PIs.
  • CoI: Co-Investigator on one or more instruments, including instrument Co-PI
  • USERs: all scientists and public.

General Rules

  • The Science Working Team (SWT) has the rights to open the data to USERs once data have been ingested into the archive.
  • The ESA and CAS science data archives will be the repository of all mission products.
  • The SMILE mission is funded by CAS, ESA and member states of ESA, and Canada. The proprietary data period for the SWT is one year after data have been received by them.
  • A PI could open the data of his/her instrument to the USERs in the proprietary period after approval by the SWT.
  • After one-year proprietary period, all data will be open to the USERs.
  • Quicklook plots will be publicly available as soon as feasible and, except with specific agreement from SWT, should not be used for publication.

Responsibilities and rights

  • Chief scientists and project scientists

    • Chief Scientists and Project Scientists have the same data rights as PIs for exploitation during the proprietary period.
  • PIs (including mission Co-PIs)

    • A PI is responsible for the processing of science data, including calibration and validation. The PIs of instruments retain exclusive data rights of all instruments for exploitation during the proprietary period. Mission Co-PIs have the same data rights as PIs for exploitation during the proprietary period.
  • CoIs (including instrument Co-PI)

    • CoIs retain exclusive data rights for exploitation of their instrument during the proprietary period.
