Team 1: 'Exploring the poles of the Sun'

This team will explore new datasets acquired during the polar passes to understand how the magnetic field and the solar atmosphere behave in the polar regions. Members of the team are expected to have proficiency in the analysis of remote-sensing data and/or relevant modelling.

Team 2: 'Connectivity science: how Solar Orbiter bridges the gap between the Sun and the solar wind'

This team will explore the multi faceted aspects of how solar wind streams form at the Sun and get structured spatially and temporally, by harnessing remote-sensing, in situ and forward modelling whenever possible. Members of the team are expected to have proficiency in Python, data analysis, with some background in solar physics or in-situ observations of the solar wind.

Team 3: 'Small-scale events in the Sun's atmosphere'

The project aims to characterise and track small-scale dynamic EUV events (e.g., brightenings, jets, loops) in active regions, using high-resolution EUI observations. We aim to understand how the occurrence and properties of these events vary across magnetic environments, and to identify potential correlations between their energy release signatures, their role in linking atmospheric layers, and their influence on the large-scale corona traced by the magnetic field topology. EUI data will be complemented by other Solar Orbiter instruments, e.g., magnetic field measurements from PHI, ground-based observations, and potentially supported by numerical modelling and machine learning techniques.

Team 4: 'Solar eruptive events: tracking flares, CMEs and particles from the Sun to the heliosphere'

This team's goal is to better understand how flares and solar eruptive events accelerate particles at the Sun, and how those signatures evolve and are detected throughout the heliosphere. Team members are expected to work on Solar Orbiter’s remote sensing and in situ capabilities to track the full chain of energy release, flare, CME propagation, and particle acceleration. Members of team are therefore expected to have proficiency in remote-sensing and in situ data analyses and a good knowledge of Python (e.g. SunPy).

Team 5: 'Multi scale structures of the solar wind'

 

This team will explore the solar wind from mesoscales to microscales with in situ particle and electromagnetic field instruments. With the complete Solar Orbiter package, team members will explore plasma structures and instabilities, and the link between the two. Members of the team are therefore expected to have proficiency in in situ data analyses.
