Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM) Science Meeting
1-2 March 2016, ESA/ESAC
The Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM), a small mission of opportunity currently studied by ESA in Phase A, has the threefold purpose of testing asteroid deflection by kinetic impact (in combination with the NASA DART impactor mission), to perform asteroid science, and to demonstrate new technology.
If implemented, it will be launched in 2020 to investigate the binary asteroid Didymos before, during, and after the impact of the DART spacecraft in 2022. It will carry a camera, a thermal infrared imager, two radars, an optical terminal (to demonstrate optical telecommunications in interplanetary space) that is planned to be used as a laser altimeter, a MASCOT-type lander, and 2 cubesats.
The goal of the meeting is to discuss the scientific and impact mitigation aspects of the mission, the mission and payload concept, and to inform the relevant communities about the mission status. Presentations are invited about the following topics:
On the evening of 1st March, GMV invites all participants of the meeting to their premises in Tres Cantos for an event combining AIM and Rosetta.
The meeting will take place 1-2 March 2016 at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada near Madrid. More about ESAC and how to get there can be found on:
We have reserved rooms in the NH hotel Alberto Aguilera in Madrid. The special rate for the meeting is not available anymore, but rooms can still be booked directly through the hotel:
We will provide a bus service between Madrid and ESAC. The buses will leave in front of the hotel Alberto Aguilera. Please indicate your interest in the bus service when registering.
