Workshop Mars V
24-29 April 2022, Les Houches, Ecole de Physique, France

Over the past fifteen years, our understanding of Mars state and evolution has made considerable progress, with the successful operation of many space missions, either in orbit or at the surface of Mars (Mars Express orbiter, the MER Spirit and Opportunity rovers, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Phoenix lander, the Curiosity rover, the MAVEN orbiter, the ExoMars/Trace Gas Orbiter, InSight and finally Perseverance, HOPE and Tianwen 1). Thanks to these new available data, we are now in a position to address the main questions regarding our sibling planet Mars. While Mars Express and MRO have allowed us to better understand the planet’s geology, mineralogy and subsurface composition on a large scale, the MER and Curiosity rovers have provided us with in situ analyses of rock samples and their environments. The atmospheric escape rate and mechanisms have been investigated by the Mars Express and MAVEN orbiters. TGO has provided us with important results about the atmospheric composition and the seasonal variations of the Martian atmosphere. The MY34 Global Dust Storm (June – September 2018) was a great opportunity for monitoring the response of the atmosphere, both from ground and space, in the case of a high dust content. Over the past two years, several new results, in some cases contradictory, have been obtained, with Curiosity, PFS, TGO and ground-based observations, regarding the possible presence of methane on Mars. These apparent discrepancies have led to an intense modeling effort to try to reconcile all the observations, and this question remains an active field of research. The first seismic events have been detected by Insight, opening a new way to study Mars' interior and activity.

The workshop “Planet Mars V” will be the fifth edition of a series which has taken place in the Center of Physics in Les Houches since 2003. These workshops were organized to bring together senior scientists, young scientists, postdocs and students in order to optimize the analysis and interpretation of space data, and to prepare the community for the best exploitation of forthcoming missions. As in the case of the previous editions, the format of the workshop will encourage discussions. Leading scientists in the interpretation of data and in modelling processes will present their views on key topics, such as (1) internal structure and magnetism; (2) volcanism, geomorphology, geology, mineralogy and petrology; (3) atmospheric cycles, water history and atmospheric escape. Special attention will be given to the prospect of future planetary missions to Mars. A session of comparative planetology will also include discussions on Venus, Mars, the Earth and Titan. Posters from students and scientists are encouraged ; they will be displayed and discussed during a dedicated poster session and coffee breaks.

This workshop was initially planned for May 3 - 8, 2020, but was cancelled due to the Covid crisis and postponed to the present dates (24 - 29 April, 2022). All participants registered for the May 2020 session have been invited to re-apply for the 2022 session. The number of confirmations leads to about 15 positions available for new participants.

The deadline for registration is 26 November, 2021. Students and postdocs are especially encouraged to register (check the link on the left navigation bar) and to submit a poster. Participants registered for the 2020 session should also fill the registration form to confirm their venue and send a new abstract. As the number of participants is limited to 70, a selection may have to be made by the organising committee. The notification will be done by mid-December 2021.

Practical information

Les Houches is a remote area in the French Alps. From the dining room, you will enjoy an incredible view on massif du Mont-Blanc.

The meeting will be an in-person event. No remote connexion is foreseen.

For more information, click the link on the left nagivation bar.

Accommodations at Les Houches are very good (bedrooms with bathroom accommodated in a number of chalets). Three meals in a common dining room are included in the accommodation fees each day of the workshop. The cost for meals and lodging is 498 Euro per person for the whole week. There will be no registration fee.

Considering the uncertainty of the sanitary situation in the world, the paiement for the meals and lodging will be requested between April 3 and April 24, 2022. A website with information for the paiement will be provided.
