Workshop Overview

The Asteroid Impact Deflection Assessment (AIDA) workshop is open to the whole small body, impact, and dynamics communities, including those working on instrumentation or operations. The main objective is to present and discuss current status of the ongoing analyses in support and preparation to NASA's DART, together with its LICIA cubesat, and ESA's Hera missions constituting the AIDA international collaboration. Future plans will also be discussed based on presentations of the AIDA working groups, and the whole community is invited to contribute in order to identify areas requiring additional investigations and providing opportunities for further collaboration among the differe research groups. DART is currently in phase C of its development while Hera is entering phase B2. 

The workshop will take place on 11 to 13 September in the "Aula Ottagona" of the Terme di Diocleziano in Rome. It will start in the morning of the 11th and end in the afternoon of the 13th 

 

The Asteroid impact deflection assessment (AIDA) cooperation

The AIDA cooperation between NASA and ESA, together with ASI LICIA cubesat, constitute the first planetary defence validation mission. They are a technology demonstration with the objective to show that humankind is capable of deflecting a hazardous near-Earth asteroid: NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission will be launched in 2021 and impact the secondary component of the binary near-Earth asteroid (65803) Didymos in 2022. The LICIA cubsat will be relased shortly before impact to monitor impact location and provide photodocumentation of the experiment. The impact will change the orbital period of the asteorid moon sufficiently to be measured by observatories on Earth. ESA’s Hera mission, proposed for full funding at the SPACE 19+ Ministerial Conference in November this year, is planned to launch in October 2024 and rendezvous Didymos in early January 2027. It will greatly enhance our understanding of the outcome of the DART impact by measuring the mass of the asteroid moon, investigating the DART crater, and determining the surface and subsurface/interior characeristics of the asteroid pair. As the first rendezvous with a binary asteroid, Hera also promises great scientific return, and it will perform  relevant measurements for the preparation of asteroid resources utilisation.
