XMM Newton Science Workshop 2018:
"Time-domain Astronomy: A High Energy View"

The XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre is organising the astrophysical workshop

Time-Domain Astronomy: A High Energy View

13th-15th June 2018
European Space Astronomy Centre, Madrid, Spain

Many astronomical objects are variable. Time variability encodes key information about the source physics, complementary to that in spectra, and essential for our complete understanding of the phenomena involved. With the upcoming multi-wavelength time-domain monitoring facilities (Gaia, LSST, ASAS, TESS, PanSTARRS, SKA...) an enormous potential for multi-wavelength studies will soon be available. This workshop aims to summarise the current understanding of the variability in high energy astrophysical objects in order to explore the potential synergy with other facilities and to foster cooperation between observers in different energy bands.

Registration opening and abstract submission are planned for January 2018.

More information will be posted at

ESA Research Fellowships in Space Science at ESAC
Deadline: 2nd October 2017

Postdoctoral fellowships in the area of Astronomy and Astrophysics related to the X-ray observatory XMM-Newton are tenable at the XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre in the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) located in Villafranca del Castillo, near Madrid, Spain.

The deadline for applications is

2nd October 2017

The European Space Agency awards several postdoctoral fellowships each year. The aim of these fellowships is to provide young scientists, holding a PhD or the equivalent degree, with the means of performing space science research in fields related to the ESA Science Programme. The fellowships have a duration of two years, with a possible third year extension.

Applications are now solicited for fellowships to begin in autumn 2018. Preference will be given to applications submitted by candidates within five years of receiving their PhD.

Research opportunities with XMM-Newton science staff include, among other, studies of the high energy emission of novae, galaxies, and AGN using XMM-Newton data. Working at ESAC within the XMM-Newton team gives the unique opportunity of being in contact with the calibration scientists, the developers of the analysis software and the User Support Group.

Please contact Norbert Schartel ( ) for more details on ESA Research Fellowships related to XMM-Newton.
